It was like perfectly planned that my portable HDD was left in the office since last Friday. I who was supposed to work from home on Monday, had to go to office to get it. It has all the office data and emails.

After lunch time, the brown box package was sent to my desk. I knew it. I knew it right from that very second that it's Leehom's CD. Even though I had all the songs already, I still felt so excited when I opened that box.

It's a huge package for a normal CD. It's like 40 x 40 x 10 cm box. I was told that the preoder will come with a huge poster, so I was expecting it. I have no idea where to put the poster though, maybe in my son's room as he's a fan too.

I didn't find any huge poster, but got something else, more interesting stuffs. A nice photo book of his HLQK MV shoot. A girl came to my desk seeing me giggle and she asked who is Leehom. So I went bla bla bla bla bla..... and just like any other person who was introduced to Leehom's profile, she went "WOW! very talented". I swear to you, I didn't exaggerate, use flowery words or something, his profile is just beyond average. And about the photo book, lots of nice pictures but honestly, either Leehom is becoming very thin or he did something with his face. It looked like a really long face.

Then, there's another plastic packed separately. At first, I thought it's the poster but when I opened it... OMG!! It's a balloon, a replica of Bahamut. And soon, some of the guys around my desk came and asked if I would give it to them. Heu? Yeaa.... hello guys, over my dead body, ok? LOL!!

I waited till I got home to blow it. And it was so cute that my son asked me to take his picture with it.

Still Love You - 2 Min Version

What can we get from a 2 minute show? Pretty much a lot, I think. The length of the song is 04:28, so this 02:01 almost tells all.

It's a nice MV, however I can't say that it's the best of Wong Fu productions. I was really curious when I read the overwhelmed reaction from everybody everywhere right the moment it was confirmed that Wong Fu will work with Leehom for the MV. I didn't know who is Wong Fu. So I began to surf.

I started from their youtube channel and found out that these 3 guys are extremely refreshing and talented. http://www.youtube.com/user/WongFuProductions

So, I was putting my expectation up up above the clouds ... Well, the idea of using that frame was unique and fresh, Leehom nailed some of the scenes with his smiles, as usual. But something was missing. I didn't find my self "WOW" like when I saw the Open Fire MV. To me, it looks like another "Forever Love", "Kiss Goodbye" or "Everything". His "Falling Leaf Returns to Root" and "Heartbeat" are better.

I dont think Wong Fu top their David Choy's MV.
It's one of the sweetest MV I have ever seen. Brilliant!

I'm not happy with the title... I could be an "Insanely Super Crazy Fan" or I think I can be a "Insanely Super Die Die Crazy Fan", if only I took the song list from 1998 album. I thought, since he already had "EVOLUTION Album" that had songs from "Revolution (1998)", "Wei Yi (2000)"

But anyway.. some songs really surprised me.

Astrology and As Time Goes By are the 2 most shocking songs. I was really clueless that those 2 songs are included.
I actually had some feeling that Selina duet and Jane Zhang duet will be included. And they were, so my guess could have been correct that it's for a business reason.
I Can't Stop Loving You and Dream Again. Friend told me that those will be the Japanese version and I think so too, because Leehom put the English title of the songs. Can I wish that the Dream Again to be in English?
Who are You Thinking of at this Moment. I loveeeeeeee this song so very very much. And I am extremely happy that Leehom included it. This is a gorgeous song with a gorgeous guitar play. I wonder why he never sang it alive. The song totally deserves more recognition.

If I had guessed it from "Revolution" and "Wei Yi".. I would have added 5 correct guesses and that would make me an "Insanely Super Crazy Fan"

New Album 2011, New Song

A true die die hard fan like me must have been expecting something not only extra-ordinary, but also extra-nice new songs coming from each of Leehom's new album. He's not like releasing album twice a year, - that would awesome, I'm not against it.. But he's not releasing it once a year either. So, I was always hoping that his album is something worth waiting for.

Define that worth waiting for.

Okay, that would be revealing the whole me worshiping his ballads, that's my first criteria. Then, it will have to come out with at least 20 new songs, haha! Third would be MV for each of the song, and ... last but not least, there are cute merchandises attached when we buy it.

I was a bit slow this year on the whole Leehom's things. I didn't update my blog, I didn't browse, I didn't even know that he is releasing new album this year. I'm still a die die hard fan, don't try to argue on that.

I have to admit. After listening to it more than 5x... it still didnt grow on me yet, except on that "waa...ai... ai.. ai... part". Some fans said it sounds like MJ's song.. no idea, really. I'm a bit lost with the new song.. so the next one better be ballad. Otherwise ........ nothing. I will still buy the album. hehe.

oh..*this line was added after 8x listening and after 10min the post was uploaded* I think the MJ part is coming from that "ah and ugh" .... the very famous signature of MJ.

Hmm... I love to make a list of what are the 28 songs he's gonna put into the album and score myself with:

I can't believe just how long I have not updated this blog. I read a comment from somebody who randomly found my blog, she said she loves it and asked me to keep on posting ... *ahem* I need to keep the spirit of writing alive. Well, of course I will.... I promise.. I guess :). haha!

So, I heard and read that Leehom was hanging out with friends, attending friend's wedding, doing a few performance, receiving awards (again n again) shooting some ads, and updating his Weibo and his Facebook.

Comparing to his previous work schedules when he was doing album and movie promotion, those are like .. really just a few. I am very sure, Leehom had a lot of free time for himself.

I know... I have been a very lousy fan these couple of months. I didn't update this blog as much as before. Not that I feel bored of Leehom, not that I don't love him anymore... It's just that my works, I cannot leave. These past few months have been crazy, but actually, I didn't see many big updates from Leehom, or.. have I missed a lot?

These pictures were taken by a fan name Happy from HK. Leehom's latest performance in Dongguan, Nov 29 - 2010. How can I not love him?? He's just as charming as always.

I now understand why the song "Need Someone by Yourside" is favorite to many fans. The lyric is about loneliness, so I guess fans really relate the whole meaning of the song with Leehom's life. I have mentioned here that this song is my least fave song in Leehom's new album. However, Leehom loves it so much that he decided to do something extraordinary in the MV!

When I said Leehom and extraordinary... would you ever think of "S-E-X"?

Well, I believe most of Leehom fans didn't think that far beyond. Leehom's image for all these 15 years of his music career is a "sweetheart". No scandalous gossip except for that "gay" and "ShuQi" rumors which no media can ever show any proofs. Not sure whether he is every girls's desire of a boyfriend, but I bet with all of my money in my wallet (hahaah) that he is every mothers' dream of a son-in-law.

In my eyes as a fan, oh yeaaah.. I do have a confession to make, he is a cute fun loving person, but in the eyes of a woman (me *shy*), he is just not that "hot" enough. Is it because I have never seen any "scenes" of Leehom doing some "stunts"? The most daring stunt he goes was his short close up kissing scene with Liu Yifei in "Love in Disguise". But I still didn't think it's hot enough :P Compared to Tom Welling's kissing in Smallville, Leehom looks so amateur. ahaha..* Gosh! I still feel dizzy after watching the clip heuehuee....*

Then this MV is out today!
It's only 2 mnts, but has turned my whole world upside down. Leehom.. in my eyes, has transformed himself to "the object of my fantasy". LOL! Still a bit skinny but he definitely looks so mature, manly and HOT!!

LOL!! of course he's hot.. he's looking hot in every possible and impossible way to me... but those are not the ones I call HOT.

What I meant is the MV. I have the pleasure of capturing the images of the 90' MV of "Mei" and .. won't you all agree that .. the MV is HOT????

Personal note:
The girl is not too pretty ... *oops* sorry no offense, but I got this idea that actually Leehom intentionally picked "not too pretty" girls for his HOT MV. He seldom does hot scenes with his MV female co-stars. Other MVs are romantic and the female co-stars are all so pretty.. Shangrila, Heartbeat, Forever Love.. all are pretty, including Shu Qi in First Morning MV. I notice so far only "Kiss Goodbye" and this new song "Mei" where he did some hot scenes.

In "Kiss Goodbye" MV, he had to kiss the girl and I read that he personally picked his own co-star for the MV. Second is this "Mei". I wonder if he also chose himself. Whatever. That girl was just so lucky to get Leehom laid his hands on her. LOL!!!!

Fifteen is the number of years it takes for whiskey to mature and age to perfection. For Asian American c-pop singer Leehom Wang, fifteen years has had little effect on his good looks as time has left virtually no trace on his almost perfect complexion. The shy and sunny smile from his youth can still be found on him. Only through his eyes might traces of his real age show through – the stare of someone who is a mature veteran in his industry and is comfortable with its intricacies. But beyond that, one can still see the passion that glows continuously from his eyes, with the same intensity as fifteen years ago.

When people hear “Leehom Wang”, they often conjure up positive adjectives such as “clean”, “comfortable”, or “ideal idol”. However, “film director”, a heavy duty artistic profession that usually requires a dose of rebelliousness, seems to have little or no connection with Leehom. Nevertheless, in the Summer of 2010, Leehom will be making the rounds with media interviews and attending film festivals as a real film director. Not only will he debut as the director for the movie “Love in Disguise”, but he will also star in the movie as the male lead.

Natural Path toward Directing
“Love in Disguise” was not Leehom’s first foray into directing. Years earlier, Lehom had already started directing his own music videos [i.e. “In the Depths of Bamboo Forest”, or his latest music video "Firewood, Rice, Oil, Salt, Sauce, Vinegar, Tea", shown below]. After debuting on the silver screen as a film actor, in Ang Lee’s “Lust, Caution”, Lee was intrigued and although unplanned he made his first steps toward becoming a film director.

“I normally go with the flow for everything. I didn’t set a goal to release an album at the very beginning, nor did I set a goal to become an actor from the onset. Similarly, I didn’t say I want to become a director at the beginning. My thoughts in becoming a director came naturally. It follows my thought pattern and attitude in creating better products. If this song can be done in a better way, why not try to produce it on my own? This way of thinking is what I would like others to understand. I have these thoughts naturally, and that doesn’t mean I would necessarily need to be titled as a director or a producer. I just love to improve my creations. That’s why for this movie, it’s also simply a way to express my ideas and my creative side to my audience, and that’s why I decide to handle it directly.”

With an astrological sign of Taurus, Leehom exhibits the quality of his sign: steadiness and great emotional control. In a gentle and resolute manner, he told us the reason why he chose to become a director. His way of thinking is unobtrusive, and yet it contains a great imploding power – perhaps, this comes from the experience Leehom accumulated over the years.

Strange Bearded Man’s Directing Experience
“Love in Disguise” is a movie that allows viewers to explore the witty and comedic side of Leehom. Not only was he the film director, he also wrote the screenplay and acted as the lead. This metro romantic comedy has many funny jokes and it also mixed in some real life experiences of Leehom’s.

“The main character is a famous star. In the story, he pretends to be a very strange minority student with a big beard. This plot is definitely inspired by my real way of life. When I go to a foreign country, and nobody recognizes me, I normally introduce myself as a piano teacher. And when I normally go out in Taiwan, I do have some wigs, fake beard, etc. prepared… Of course, the movie has exaggerated these fun stuff, but it does reflect certain parts of my life. From different levels or angles to watch this film, you can simply say, it’s a romantic comedy, or you can say it’s a musical, or a combination of pop and traditional music. It is a collection of the interesting and funny side of the entertainment industry that I observed over the years.”

Even though he is the film director, Leehom stressed that the shooting atmosphere was cheerful and funny, due to the fact that it was a romantic comedy. Supporting cast and comedian Chen Han Dian often imitated him during the shoot. Of course, filmmaking has always been a difficult business, regardless of the atmosphere. There was a time when almost everyone in the crew caught a cold, and yet everyone soldiered on to finish the movie.

This is Leehom Wang’s first attempt at directing and acting in the same film. This time around, there is a great contrast between his performance on the more serious movies such as “Lust, Caution” or “Little Big Soldier”. So, which character is the real him? In reality, none of them are. As Leehom likes to explore new stuff all the time, we believe viewers will be anticipating a surprising new “him” in his next project.

Being Himself as a Director
Thirteen years ago, on the first issue of men’s uno magazine: At the time, Leehom was only in the public eye for two years. With a fresh young image, he was presented on this new and unknown magazine. Within these thirteen years, he reappeared on men’s uno for around eight to nine times. The youthful, innocent look is no longer there, instead, a mature Leehom has also slowly changed his image from “ideal idol” to a multidirectional creative intellect. Perhaps in our minds, he is still the boy with a sunshine smile. But who would have thought… he has already been in the entertainment circle for fifthteen years.

“Maybe it’s because I have never stopped working!” He smilingly said, “I have always kept myself at “ready” mode, I have never let myself relaxed. Perhaps that’s the secret formula on letting others believe I have not aged at all!”

Continually trying new things, Leehom always amazes his fans with his latest creations. And perhaps it’s part of his personality, he loves to try out new things , such as learning new musical instruments, different languages, and even Khoomi singing (Mongolian throat singing). He doesn’t want to be sold and presented as merely a product, and hopes others will take note of his art. He never sets a limit on his performance in different areas. From his debut fifteen years ago, he has grown into a respected and successful entertainer, but at the same time he wishes to become more like his idol entertainer Prince, or a director such as Stanley Kubrick, who seemed to be perpetually inspired, constantly producing multi-dimentional pieces.

This year, Leehom enters a new phase of his life as a film director. Not only can he direct a story, he also keeps adding new elements and new colors to his own life. I believe that he is not just a good singer and a good actor, but also a naturally good director.

Not that Leehom is MIA again... coz his schedule is unbelievable!! Look at below ...

hope he has all the strength and health to do all of those and gets 1 month break afterwards. I need him to be chubby again.. LOL!

No wonder he said that many times he forgot in which city he woke up in the morning.. ummm.. not always in the morning I guess. I bet he stayed awake till almost dawn, and woke up at noon. But from recent article, I found out that actually Leehom can easily fall asleep in less than 3 minutes ... anywhere!

Leehom answered fan's question in an event in Singapore (Brand Anniversary) that "LOVE WHAT YOU DO" was the thing that has kept him motivated. His brother Leekai said, he'd be happy if he can have half passion of what Leehom has toward his music.. Love and Passion to what we do, to our work, to our job.. will give us strength to persistently give the best and Love and Passion will also make us happy during rough times. I believe him.

Leehom Wang’s latest track “Bo Ya Cuts The Strings (伯牙絕弦)” marks his second collaboration with Ashin of Mayday after "Beside the Plum Blossoms" in 2005. The song was inspired by the famous story of Bo Ya and Ziqi (伯牙與子期) from the Spring and Autumn Period (春秋時代). Leehom had wanted to pen the lyrics himself, but after three days without any sleep or lyrics, he went to Ashin for help. Leehom was apparently so satisfied with the results that he called Ashin a “Genius Contemporary Lyricist”!

In the lyrics of "Bo Ya Cuts The Strings", it described the meeting of musician Bo Ya with his listener Ziqi, in which the latter could understand his music like no other. As the song title suggested, Bo Ya cut the strings off his guqin (a string instrument) after he found out Ziqi has died. The story resumed a thousand years later with the musician playing his melody again, dedicating it to the one who truly understands him.

The story of Bo Ya and Ziqi was also incorporated into Leehom's movie Love in Disguise. He played the role of Bo Ya, while costar Crystal Liu played Ziqi, along with his song "Bo Ya Cuts The Strings" as the movie's theme. In the music video, Leehom transforms himself into a modern day "Bo Ya" who travels back in time in search of "Ziqi". Unfortunately Crystal Liu was busy filming a new film at the time, so the production team found a lookalike that has long hair and plays the Guzheng. But on a closer look, she actually looks more like Sandrine Pinna than Crystal Liu.

I love this review, it gave me deeper understanding of the album. It's the privilege of being a fan who understand Chinese to be able to appreciate the album more than non-Chinese speaking fans. Gosh.... how I wish I'm expert in Chinese language and culture. I felt a little regret because back in college, I didn't take Chinese Major but English instead.

1. Dragon Dance
Not exactly what I had imagined a “dragon dance” would sound like. But this is one of the longest album intro I’ve heard so far. Most of it were excerpts of his latest movie, Love in Disguise. As for the actual lyrics part, he’s introducing his new Wushu of Music that’s fresh to our eyes and ears and remind ‘em why ’til the end he don’t quit. Great way to start another volume of his Chinked-out style.

2. 杜 U ♥ Me [Do You Love Me]
The melody starts of similarly as with several k-pop releases lately. This song is also part of his movie. 杜 was used as a play on words as this was the last name of his character, Du Ming Han, and also used as “do” in this song. He’s asking the female protagonist if she loves him. Very catchy yet too repetitive. It’s not his common style either so this is one of his new sounds as he mentioned in Dragon Dance.

3. 十八般武藝 [The 18 Martial Arts]
This song now starts with the Chinked-out style as traditional instruments were used for the intro. He’s saying he’s been away but now he’s back with more. Yes, this is CHINKED-OUT symphony, sent out to the entire world and I hope it does reach new ears this time around. Here’s to hoping people around the world will recognize the 十八般武藝 (idiom: versatility) of Leehom.

4. 你不知道的事 [All The Things You Never Knew]
Another song from the movie, this is the main ballad in the album. The piano melody is what you can always expect from Leehom’s ballads. Along with his powerful emotional vocals, this is the main ballad in the album.

5. 伯牙絕弦 [BoYa Cuts The Strings]
This song is based on a story about BoYa, a man who played a guqin. I had an opportunity to try and translate this song with a friend and I think the lyrics by Mayday’s Ashin and 831′s Ah Pu is just plain genius. They got to incorporate the story and the visuals well into the song. Part of the message says that knowing someone is to know someone’s music. The guqin instrumental at the end still gives me goosebumps whenever I hear it.

6. 柴米油鹽醬醋茶 [Firewood, Rice, Oil, Salt, Soy Sauce, Vinegar, Tea]
The first single off the album. This simple song, along with simple lyrics, written by Vivian Hsu, demonstrated well, the artist’s desire for a simple and normal life. He used the idiom 柴米油鹽醬醋茶, the seven things you need to have each morning (to open the door), which is basically just having the essentials for living. This is one easy song for KTV.

7. 美 [Beauty]
Warning: this song is extremely repetitive. But once you’ve seen the lyrics, you’ll realize that the repetitive “mei” is three different characters. 美 – beauty/beautiful, 媚 – charming, and 妹 – little sister. As with the earlier songs, he used a bit of ancient Chinese legends, The Four Beauties, of which two were mentioned in the song as an example of the beauty he was describing.

8. 需要人陪 [Need Someone By Your Side]
Another emotional ballad with a piano melody. Just by listening to his voice, you’ll know this is such a sad and lonely song. At his age, he might be starting to think that he’ll need to settle down soon so he feels the need to have someone just by his side. (Not too far off with track 6, about wanting a normal life)

9. 天涯海角 [Ends Of The Earth]
From the melody and vocals, this seems a little more hopeful. From being alone, now he has someone he wanted to be with that he’ll travel the Ends Of The Earth for them to be together. I found this song a little more sweet and lighter the the other ballads.

10. 你不知道的事（宋曉青版本） [All The Things You Never Knew (Song Xiao Qing Version)]
A shorter version of the original song. It sounds more raw and unplugged which makes it sound more emotional. I prefer something as plain/unedited as this song over the more played original.

11. 自己人 [One Of Us]
Leehom ends his album with a special message with the help of some kids from Sierra Leone. Singing glory alleluia amen… African beats add a twist to his usual Chinked-out along with a little violin melody in the background. It makes the song more internationally tuned.

Summary:
Before the album came out, I was actually expecting a more acoustic album but I wasn’t disappointed in knowing that most of the songs were more upbeat that I’ve expected. He came back with a new style of Chinked-out that’s truly new and refreshing even for long-time fans. As I had an opportunity to translate a few songs with a friend, I’ve discovered a new side of his music, lyrics and more of the legends of ancient China. His dream of having people more exposed to Chinese culture with his music will be easy to realize with this latest album that shows his versatility in the arts.

I have just browsed Our Home Singapore and found out that they are offering a beautiful handbag hanger exclusive for fans club members who preorder Love in Disguise DVD which will be out sometime in September... and I just want it sooooo bad! The preorder ends today :(

But..... I am a die hard fan who's fighting and striving to get the best collection of my idol (those within my budget, of course LOL!) So, I've sent them an email and surprised! .. They replied me pretty quick like less that an hour.

I always love people who are not afraid of making fun of themselves, laughing at themselves.. to me, that is sexy! And I was not surprised if Leehom is one of them, coz he's just "adorkably sexyyyy" .... yaaayy! I invented new English word. LOL!!

His movie "Love in Disguise" was doing really very well on the first week since it's launched. He's thanking fans and joking that he has to "fight" against Stallone's Expendables this weekend, hopes fans will still support A-De (his character in LID). Niceee ..... and I think it's really him who did the PS! LOL!!

I read there will be some spoofs in Love in Disguise, that he's doing it against himself or against others. Like for example: the gay gossip, the paparazzi, and Du Ming Han doing a toilet's paper ads. I read that he's making fun of celebrities who accept any jobs even a ridiculous one.

Ummm.... btw. I can't really imagine Leehom with a body like that... uugh! He's better not because he will not be able to move and dance nicely while singing. He won't be able to stand on on one hand either (like he used to) .. the body is too heavy. And his giant fingers may not be used to play guitar or violin or piano. Maybe just a drum. lol! But on the other hand.... I think it will benefit him. He will not need bodyguards anymore. ahahaaa.. Crazy crowd who are trying to pinch him will get nothing but a stony muscle.

Did Leehom Lip-Sync?

Leehom's youtube channel "officialwangeehom" has just uploaded 3 new video of his "18 Martial Art" Press Launch held in Taipei on Aug 13. And there have been a discussion whether he did "lip-sync" in the event. Well, the answer is NO. He did not lip-sync, nor has to lip-sync... He is one of the greatest live singers in the world. He doesn't have to lip-sync. But why those 3 video really look like he did?

It's actually 3 "audio edited video" that had been uploaded. Leehom sang live on the event, but the original voice was replaced with the recorded voice, from the released CD. Oh yeaaah... *sigh of disagreement*

I have 7 points that "officialwangleehom" must not upload an audio-edited video:

it's an official channel, the source has to be original and credible. The channel has some sort of "responsibility" to provide the trustworthy quality video to protect Leehom's image.
the "edited-vid" is not professionally well-done. I know that his concert DVDs were edited, but I dont mind at all because I know it's for commercial purpose and professionally well-done. They recorded live, along with the conversation, cheers, applauds and fans scream. It's not just a voice over using contents from a released CD.
youtube is a free channel. Everyone can watch and comment, sometimes the comments are just irresponsible and ignorant for the whole world to read. So you decide yourself, is it good for Leehom himself?
fans who understand that it's an edited vid, have to defend Leehom and posted clarification again and again and again for others who posted a comment like "it's a lip-sync" without reading the other comments first. Ouch, I mean come on! That is not gonna happen if the vid are not uploaded, rite?
It's a free live event where everyone came with handycam. For me, it's just a shame if the audio coming from the same event is totally different from one another. It's like cheating, isn't it?
And last... Leehom doesn't need it. As I said, he is one of the greatest live singers in the world. His live performances are just as good as the recorded ones and even better because.... he is so damn good in doing improvisation (ad-libs). I collected many of his live performance and noticed that he always sings 1 same song differently. There are just too many proofs on this. Good example are his "WeiYi, Gong Zhuan Zhi Zuan (Revolution)" and most of his hits, he didn't sing them the way he recorded them in the CD. And I love him for that, a lot.

I have no idea whether it's Leehom's idea or not, but I personally think that if it's just a voice over edited video, "officialwangleehom" should not upload it.

Unlike other fans who think Leehom’s new album "18 Martial Arts" is not that good, I, on the contrary love it so much. I mean, I love all the tracks of the album. So, I’m giving it 9 out of 10. And this is my first album writing ever since I become Leehom’s fan 4 years ago. I’m not someone who is expert on music let alone review it. It’s just from a personal point and for a sharing purpose only.

From some source that I found and limitedly understand, coz mostly in Chinese translated using Google translation, I read that Leehom continues his Chinked-Out Style with different approach. His “Shangrila” was using Tibet traditional music instrument. “Heroes of Earth” was using Peking Opera music. And this time, Leehom tried “Chinese classical music” and coined them with some modern sounds. And it’s a super well done!

01. Dragon Dance
It's a genius track. I dont know how many surprises he put into one song. Several different vocals from singing, talking, rapping, whispering, there's a female voice too, even one that sounds like somebody who's annoyingly sobbing. I don’t think all voices in this track is Leehom's only voice, but if it is... wow! his skill of impersonating others voice is really great. The music is awesome, sounds modern but mixed with traditional Chinese music instrument. The only thing's lacking is that it's too short. ENCORE! ENCORE!

02. 杜 U ♥ Me (Du U Love Me)
It's a very catchy song, very easy to like. This track shocked me the most, because I never thought I would like this song so much. I have always preferred Leehom's ballad, but for this one... it definitely wins over his beautiful ballad "Firewood, Rice...." It reminds me of his "Doll" in "Heartbeat", a playful song that sticks in your head. “Do you love me? Do you want me? Do do do do do, do do do do .... you love me??” YES I DO, LEEHOM!! I LOVE YOU, SO MUCH.

03. 十八般武艺 Shi Ba Ban Wu Yi (18 Martial Arts)
OMG! He did it again. Leehom proves himself once again as the master of chinked-out. I dont know what kind of traditional Chinese music instrument Leehom used in this track, but it sounds like I was watching a classical kung fu movie, just like watching Jacky Chan doing his drunken kungfu style. Although personally I think Heroes of Earth is better, but I love this song too. I love how he blends that classical sound with modern beat of an electric drum. A small note: the way Leehom sings "heeeeiy...." aarrghh... I’m just melting.

04. 你不知道的事 Ni Bu Zhi Dao De Shi (All the Things You Never Knew)
What can say? The first time Leehom shared the first 48 second of the song thru his FB, I'm already in love with it. It's like magic. The more I listen, the more I'm drawn to it. I'm so thankful to God who has let Leehom created such a beautiful beautiful song. it's just too perfect, the piano, the guitar, the background orchestra, the voice. Everything is perfect. Ok Ok... I will say no more. It's so easy to understand that everybody will love this song too.

05. 伯牙绝弦 Bai Ya Jue Xian
It's the fifth tracks.. and so far I don’t have any complain yet. Not with this song too. I love it! It sounds like an easy listening song, but actually it has rich unique musical instrument that is composed and played beautifully. Leehom is just genius, and his voice is the best compliment to this song. Toward the end, at first I thought it's a bit annoying with that ~~harpa~~ (it's called "qin"), but as I listened more and more... again, it is actually beautifully arranged, composed and played.

06. 柴米油盐酱醋茶 Chai Mi You Yan Jiang Cu Cha (Daily Necessities in Life)
I notice a lot of people think that this song is too simple. But when there are so many others who are touched by and cried because of it... is it still too simple? Leehom has successfully conveyed an important message thru this song. Simple thing can really touch your heart. At first, I didn't really like it, I even complained about the way he sings "Wei wo men xian zai bu zai jia" on the second verse. But when I understand the meaning.. I agree with Leehom, it can be sang that way. He's genius. And after a few listening, it really grew on me.. On his youtube channel I commented that Leehom has transformed words "Firewood, Rice, Vinegar, Oil and tea" into a very beautiful song... Plus, the MV is also very good. So, yeah... it's great job!

07. 美 Mei
I don’t understand why this can be least fave track for some fans. To me, it's another catchy track that's been haunting my head and never fails to make my body and head move along with the melody. When they say it's too simple, is it because the lyric? I mean, almost the whole song Leehom just goes "ni ce me mei, ni ce me mei..." again and again. I'm sure the spelling is wrong (Lol) and I dont know the meaning either. But it's a nice song, it's a super nice song.

08. 需要人陪 Xu Yao Ren Pei
Another nice ballad, but I have to say that this song probably is not my fave ballad of the album. To me it's just too ordinary, nothing too special about it. I think, Leehom can produce song like this easily, like 10 songs in a day.. maybe. Lol. But I read many fans love it.. so I guess I've missed something here. Could it be the meaning? Any rough translation, please?

09. 天涯海角 Tian Ya Hai Jiao
I'm totally blown away .... I dont think I have ever felt like this with any of his latest ballad songs, except with “Trust and Losing You”. It’s his voice that makes this song so beautiful. It’s so soulful, so deep with emotion, an emotion I don’t understand.. but I believe it’s a sad feeling. I love this song so very very much. It’s a song that makes me fall in love with Leehom each and every single time I listen to it. I wish I can get the English translation soon.

10. 你不知道的事 (宋晓青版本) Ni Bu Zhi Dao De Shi (Song Xiao Qing Ban Ben)
Short version of All the things You Never Knew. I personally think this version is much more sadder than the previous one. Leehom always knows how to sing sad song so good. I think that is one of his dozens specialties.

11. 自己人 Zi Ji Ren
Wohooo! The first line is something I never expected coming from Leehom’s song. Is it a religious song? I dont know. But the violin part is so good and the whole song is also nice to listen to. A bit like reggee, a bit like an an African country music too, I think. ~~However, I have to admit that this my least fave track from the album.~~ REVISED : after hearing to this song more, I really love it. It's not my least fave track anymore. And, aaaarghh... I can't choose which one that I dont like. I love all the tracks!

Just a note, please try to listen to Leehom songs using a headphone. We will appreciate the so many eclectic and unique sounds he put into one. And we can also enjoy his flawless voice, including a better sound of his soft sighs and other adlibs words like “oooh, yeah, hooo, heiiy, hmmm, uuuuh....., owoowoo...” that have been his trademark in all of his songs.

Leehom Bans the Release of Kissing Photos

Leehom Wang’s first directorial debut, Love in Disguise will be released on August 13, 2010. In the film, Leehom will portray a superstar who disguises himself as a student in a music conservatory school while pursuing love interest, Crystal Liu Yifei.

Leehom has secretly guarded footage of his kissing scene with Crystal and banned the photos from media circulation.

Placing great importance and involved heavily with all aspects of Love in Disguise’sproduction, Leehom worked on the script personally and insisted that the leading actress be Crystal Liu. The film allegedly cost $600 million (NT) to produce.

Allegedly, Leehom and Crystal were heavily engaged in their “romance” outside of filming. Leehom and Crystal often had dinner dates together and netizens noticed the pair even wore matching lovers’ bracelets. After filming a kissing scene with Crystal, Leehom immediately took the film footage away, banning the public release of the kissing photos. Suspicion arose as to whether Leehom was using the film to privately chase after Crystal, as evidenced by his overly protective gesture of their “relationship.”

Leehom sang his new song "Things You Never Knew" at Xin'anJiang Tourism Festival 2010. However,

I dont know why, the first time I heard it.. I really thought it was a lip-sync. I've been a fan for more than 4 years, I know that there's not a single time he sang song exactly the same as in the CD.

Not that I'm complaining, I believe he has reasons, things like minus-one background music was not ready yet or maybe if it's ready, there's a technical problem, or worst Leehom was not fit enough to sing live... happened.

Although, I hate the idea of him 'lying' to the audience, if it really happened.. oh well, it could be the organizer's fault, it could be his management's fault and it could be his fault.... he is human afterall.

Leehom visited hitFM to promote his new album as their Hito Star of Aug. His new album, I don't know the official English name for it yet, some say it's "To Be Versatile" but others say it's "18 Martial Arts". Actually, I think both names can compliment each other well, as in a recent interview published by China Daily (don't worry.. I guarantee it's accurate coz it's in English, hehe). He said "I just want to be a versatile artist"

"The 18 Martial Arts" describes that he can do many things... singing, composing, producing, directing, acting, dancing (huh?), playing music instruments... and many others. But is cooking also one of his 18 Arts??

It could have tasted just like normal sunny side up eggs, but ouch! what has Chef Leehom poured too much into it??? LOL! I enjoyed every second of his expression, especially the one when the stove was suddenly off... it's so priceless..

He definitely can't cook, he needs a woman who can.
I can.. but I'm taken.. sorry... *bwhahahaa......*

Leehom Sold 13 Millions Copies of Album in 2009

According to IFPI (International Federation of the Phonographic Industry) data that has been released recently by WORD Magazine, Leehom is number one in album sales in China with total 13.000 copies, beats Jay Chou who has been in that position for 6 years in a row. However, if Google translated it correctly for me, during those 6 years, the highest selling record of Jay was 2.700 copies in 2002. I think it's a bit weird, coz 2.700 copies doesn't sound like a good sales for a singer as big as Jay. But then, when it comes to Pirated Issue, isn't that China the worst??

WORD said Leehom is the only Chinese artist with the highest selling album and almost as close as Elvis's in China. And for that, WORD put Leehom's picture on the cover together with other legends.

13 millions copies??!! WOW!! And was that in China only? I wonder it could have been a BILLION if pirated ones were counted. Lol.

I remember last year when there was a saliva war between Leehom's record company with Show Luo. SonyMusic (Leehom's) said that Luo's company have bought the music chart to fix the sales record with following result : Show at 32.32% of sales and Leehom coming in at only 12.82%.

So, with the released data from IFPI, does it mean that it's true? I don't know and I don't wanna know. All I care about is that I'm so happy that the news came in the very right time. It will help Leehom promotes his new album and his new movie... I hope.

Sun, July 25. Leehom Wang held a pre-order signing event for his upcoming album, “18 Martial Arts”, at Ximending. Heavy rain began to fall unexpectedly and two thousand fans at the event became impatient and rowdy and shouted their dissatisfaction toward the media journalists for interviewing Leehom for too long.

It’s been a year and a half since his last album, and “18 Martial Arts” is set to release on July 31st. Fans of Mainland China, Hong Kong, Thailand, Singapore, Malaysia and other places came to show their support for the superstar, but they were all soaked in rain.

The event was originally scheduled to begin at 3pm. Leehom was ten minutes late, but he immediately performed his new single, “Firewood, Rice, Oil, Salt, Soy Sauce, Vinegar, Tea”, as he dashed on stage. The fans in the rain screamed in excitement upon seeing their idol. Leehom’s good friend, Vivian Hsu, who wrote the lyrics for his latest single, also specially flew back from Japan to show her support. She gave Leehom a high-heel shoe shaped telephone as a gift and laughed, “He always busies himself with his fans and music. I’m giving him this, hoping that he can soon find a woman that will care about him and cook good things for him to eat.”

During the interview time, thirty different media crowded the stage, and two journalists quarreled due to fighting for room. The organizers immediately tried to settle the fight, but not just the journalists were heated, the fans below the stage also grew impatient waiting for the media to finish interviewing Leehom. As the media blocked the fans’ view, the fans shouted angrily, “I can’t see!”, “Be considerate of those who are actually in the rain!” And some even shouted, “bullshit!” The fans finally calmed down after Leehom, a little embarrassed, consoled, “It’ll (the interview) be done in another minute.”

American-born idol Wang Lee-hom's directorial debut is about to hit the screens with a little help from his friends, Liu Wei reports

In the opening scene of Love in Disguise, singer / songwriter Wang Lee-hom's directorial debut, the protagonist, a superstar, hits a paparazzo who has been bombarding him with questions about his girlfriend.

"Hit a paparazzo? No, I would not do that! That's what they want for the next day's headline," Wang laughs.

But, perhaps a secret desire? He smiles, "yeah ..."

"But I will not let them win," the 34-year-old star adds quickly. "I will give them the most official answer I can think of."

With looks as impressive as his Musical Talent, he has been given the title "perfect Idol", but it is not something he is comfortable with.

"I really want to know what is perfect about me?" He says.

He describes himself as rebellious, but believes the most rebellious thing he did was to persuade his father that he wanted to be a musician, not a doctor.

Born to a family of doctors in New York, he returned to Taiwan in 1995 to release his debut album after years of formal training at Williams College, and Berklee College of Music in Massachusetts. His parents are much more understanding about his job now, and Wang says he will invite his parents to watch the film.

When Wang was shooting a scene in a stadium earlier this year, he did not know his mother was sitting in the auditorium, watching him commanding some 4,000 extras with a loudspeaker. She left without any notice, but called him later to say: "Hard work and well done."

"They worried I would have no job when I stepped into this industry, but now they worry I have too many jobs," he says.

Adept in various musical instruments from piano to the erhu, he has never been afraid to break boundaries. His 20-odd albums explore Eastern and Western musical elements from rock to Peking Opera. Now he has tried his hand at filmmaking.

In Love in Disguise, which premieres on Aug 12, he stars as a superstar who disguises himself as a student in a music school to pursue the woman he loves.

"I do have wigs and a fake beard at home," Wang says. "Sometimes I also put on make-up when I go for a date or something." However, most of the time he prefers to be a "home boy", staying in his music studio at home for days, not shaving or showering, "like a mad scientist".

In the film he successfully escapes from the entertainment scene and leads a different life, but in reality he relishes new challenges.

The American-born singer was not an expert in writing in Chinese, he struggled through 54 drafts of the script, with generous advice from Wang Hui-ling, writer of Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon, and Chen Kuo-fu, writer and director of The Message.

He acted in Ang Lee's 2007 movie Lust, Caution and took heart from Lee's words of encouragement. "I remember Lee told me that if you really believe in something, it will happen," Wang says. He says that he also learnt from Lee to have the courage to touch a new topic and become an expert by learning. "Lee didn't know much about cowboys, but he was able to make Brokeback Mountain, and he even made Sense and Sensibility!"

Before making the film Wang watched many movies such as Mulan and Eddie Murphy's Coming to America, and noted their jokes and structures. He also spent several months sitting down with artists to make a storyboard of all the scenes before filming started in February.

When he began filming he remembered the example set by Jackie Estate. Internet acted in Estate's Little Big Soldier. On the first day of the shoot, Estate used a Loudspeaker to tell the crew that they could not do any harm to the Forest where they were filming. And when they left, the location should be clean. "Chan told us that even if it was a rubbish hill when we arrived, we must ensure it was clean when we finished. I told my crew the same thing," he says.

After the post-production on Disguise was finished, Wang took the first copy on the plane to Beijing and handed it to the heads of the distribution company himself. At the company's test screening, he watched his work in a cinema for the first time. "I tried to imagine myself as an ordinary filmgoer, one watching a film with popcorn in hands," he says. "And I finally felt relaxed the moment it finished - it's really not bad."

Wang is not the first singer to make a film. Taiwan pop singer Jay Chou directed a tragic love story named Secret in 2007, which was popular with both viewers and critics. The two idols are always compared. Both are Asian heartthrobs, both found fame when young and both like to fuse Chinese and Western music. Now they have both tested their talent for filmmaking.

"I am not following anyone," Wang says. "I just want to be a versatile artist."

On Jul 23, 1030PM (Jakarta Time) Leehom had a live chat on his Facebook with his fans.

I didn't plan to write this. But hey.. I have a blog, rite? And a blog means to share what I experienced... which was not much.. lol. So let's skip all the pre-chat.. and go directly to 10.30PM minus 3 hours... this part was important, coz I was so grateful that I had nice friends who're willing to wake me me to join the chat. Thank you and love you, friends :))

And I'm not gonna put what he wrote, you can easily go to his facebook and read them yourself. I thank you to Leehom for writing them in English, so I don't have to use "my beloved" Google Translator. lol.

I only had a few interesting parts to share... well, if you dont find them interesting, at least you know they were.... to me.

1. my friends and I were having fun at our own YM chat during the live chat with Leehom. Susi, Julia, Rebecca, Devi (who didn't comment anything coz I guess she's not Leehom's fan), and me. It was funny that Susi, whom I thought to be the biggest Leehom fans compared to the others, suddenly wrote: "I got to go for a shower." OMG ... she didn't care what Leehom would write next not even care whether Leehom was still gonna be there when she finished the shower. It's so Susi. Logic comes first. Or... could it be that she wanted to smell good during the chat. HAHAHAHA....

2. It was fun, because all I did was just pressing F5 F5 F5 F5 F5 F5 on his wall. LOL. Of course I posted a few too, but I knew this time he will not reply to any of us.

3. I got a fan.. well at least that's what I thought so.. coz he gave his thumbs to 2 of my posts. LOL. When I took a peek on his FB wall.. he's from Memphis, Tennessee. I don't remember I have a friend who live that far.... :D

4. Now, come to the most important part. Leehom shares a 49sec of his new song! "All the Things You Never Knew", that's the title. It was soooooooooo (I can add to more than a million "o", but my blog will look ugly, lol)... ooooooo beautiful. I really can't describe how I love the new song sooooooo (here we go again, lol) oooo much! And lucky me, I have downloaded the song immediately, coz after the chat Leehom deleted it. I was smart, wasn't I? heuheueheuee.... I know somebody else, especially the China fans.. would just uploaded it right away, which they already had - I've checked.. but I chose to respect Leehom's decision and I will not share it in public. About the song... I'm still flying on high clouds enjoying the song... it was soooo (ok, enough! lol) beautiful. It doesn't sound like Leehom singing a chinese song to me. The soft sad voice, the melody... sounds so sad.. It sounds like Leehom singing in English. It's soooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo (haha) beautiful.

So looking forward to his album. So looking forward to his movie. I think this year is gonna be a great year for Leehom and his fans. Love him soooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo (ROTFL) much!!

I imagined someday Leehom is gonna marry a beautiful woman who is smart and hot. I can't think of this pretty Ms Liu YiFei to be his bride. I dont know.. I just think there's no chemistry between them. Hope they can proof me wrong in "Love in Disguise".

And for the record, I still love the idea of Leehom and SuQhi together.. they will be one perfect couple. But whoever he is marrying someday.. hope he can live a happy life with her.

These are not my fave pictures of Leehom but I think he made a sexy messy groom. My fave was the last picture. I love the gentle hair-kisses and Leehom's eyes there. I got this wild thought looking into that eyes, looked like he said to me: "I bet you want to be her". Yes, of course! Who the hell in the world doesn't!!

Back in 2008, Leehom Wang brought us his innermost thoughts through his "Heart Beat" album. At the end of this month, on the 30th, Leehom will be returning to his musical roots with a brand new album, "十八般武艺" (Roughly translates to: Eighteen Types of Martial Arts). However, before that, he will be releasing the MV of the album's title song, "柴米油鹽醬醋茶," (Idiom roughly meaning: Daily Necessities) for broadcast onto 12 online sites, including Youtube and Facebook, on the 12th. For this song, he collaborated with Vivian Hsu to paint a picture of simple and ordinary happiness.

Having dabbled as a movie director, Leehom placed even higher demands on the quality of the MV. Besides spending NT$2,000,000, hiring 30 staff members, renting professional movie cameras, and using 35mm film for shooting, he also personally demonstrated how to walk into place and speak the lines. In one kitchen scene, "Director Wang" personally went into battle and picked up the knife and saucepan, bringing out the rare sight of him at home.

In the year and a half since Leehom came out with an album, he has been pursuing his directing dream. Day and night, he planned for his self-directed and self-starred movie, "Love in Disguise." However, while he was working on every aspect of the movie, he could not disregard his duties as an Asian superstar. He had to promote his album overseas, make his Music-Man concert rounds, act in "Little Big Soldier," promote the movie, be the spokesperson for advertisements, and prepare for his new album. Bustling to and fro, there was no time for him to rest. Thus, he decided to used an ancient saying: "早晨開門七件事─柴米油鹽醬醋茶" (Roughly translates to: The seven things needed when opening the door in the morning - firewood, rice, oil, salt, paste, vinegar, tea) to describe his busy entertainment career and the feeling of his heart's longing to return to the ordinary.

From his baby nephew growing up to his friends getting married and starting families, these are things Leehom can only hear of, but not experience it himself. Others are busy towards advancing their lives, while he is busy working towards his dream. Year after year, there is always a new dream waiting for him to pursue. When his mother went to Taipei to visit him, all she could do was watch him working from behind. Hurrying here and there, Leehom forgot to pour his mother a cup of tea and could not settle down enough for a good meal with her. Sometimes when he worked, he didn't even spare her a glance from start to end. Even after he heard the door close, it wasn't until much later before he realized: she had already left.

Pursuing a dream requires paying a high price, but his family has supported him since the beginning. That kind of acceptance suddenly made him feel of twinge of guilt. On a morning when he was trying to relax himself, despite his mind still working away searching for inspiration for an album, he saw the quiet and lonely kitchen of his own home. There was a stove that had only been used to boil water and never used oil, salt, rice, vinegar, sauces... He wrote down this song starting from the thirst of his heart. He knows that there are many people like him, pursuing their dreams, forever running without stop. He knows that the world is already flowing quickly -- no one can calm down their hearts to listen to a simple story.

As a result, he wanted, even more, to use a simple title song to share happiness -- to give you a warm embrace. With its simple warm melody, the song, flavored with an erhu accompanying the guitar, brings the feeling of an ancient place hidden in a remote area -- a simple yet meaningful taste of ordinary happiness. Through this song, he wants to tell everyone that he is like everyone else, working hard to live, working hard to find his own happiness, working hard as a person pursing his dream. There might be tears and separations in the process, but he has always believe that everyone will find their place. He wishes to tell everyone that to pursue a dream in life is very important, but you should also cherish the people around you. And, more importantly, happiness is not far away, it's right in front of you as long as you know how to treasure it.

Simple happiness hides in every drop of daily life waiting for you to taste.

If you're wondering why suddenly the header was changed to that colorful traffic light... well, it's not only because I felt a little bored with grey, but also I wanted my blog to look more alive. When we're in love.. our life is supposed to be more colorful, rite?

And, I have just found out an interesting fact about Wang Leehom name. I dont know how accurate my thought was, but let's give it a shot.

The pronunciation of Wang Lee Hom in Chinese is almost similar to the meaning of those 3 colors:

Huang ==> Yellow
Lu ==> Green
Hong ==> Red

Another proof?

Leehom as the Sole GuestStar at Usher's Beijing Concert

Leehom was appointed as the only guest star at Usher Beijing Concert, 11 July 2010. The news said, Usher did some homework to find more information on Leehom, he appraised Leehom's constant pursue of blending West and East music and respect Leehom's value towards the environment. And Usher is very serious and cares a lot about this performance, he specially sent a video of his rehearsal in the States to Leehom, hoping to strike some chemistry with him on their first collaboration.

Previously, there were some other singers listed, big names such as Jay Chou, David Tao, Will Pan, Han Gend (sorry, I dont know who are the last two).. but now it's confirmed that it will be "only Leehom" * hey! it sounds familiar! Sorry lame joke.. LOL*

I said it's a pretty amazing opportunity for Leehom to bring his music to the world. It is his dream that the world knows more about Chinese music, and it is my dream to see Leehom in an international spotlight, broader that it is right now. Leehom deserves it.

I'm just dying to find out ... what Leehom songs that Usher listened to and what songs that Leehom will sing in the concert.

An Hour with Leehom

and I was totally being ignored.... LOL !!

note to readers: it's a long post, but you have to read until the very last picture... coz there are quiet surprises down there, including a bomb of the best comment ever!

I've waited days for the online chatting with Leehom. And after seeing this post today, I spent hours with faster heart beats, star-struck until now while writing this blog.

I can't remember how many comments I've posted.. not that many, I think. Coz not only that google translator was not so kind to me... I was kinda ashamed to myself too ... oh come on... competing with teens, strangers and non-english speaking fans, it was thousands people online... with less than 0.000000000001% of being noticed ?? I must be out of my mind.... I enjoyed every second of that 60 minutes.

And my heart was like stop beating when I saw the first line he posted .. as if he's talking to me... lol!

Not sure if he saw that he got hundred of comments in a minutes he posted, but he replied to his own post. Haha!

Then he asked the fans to ask him a question (I guess, coz i'm not quite sure that's the correct translator). But before he waited for the questions, he then again... replied his own post. RFTL

But it's not Leehom if he's not adorable. He asked for some questions from everyone but when he got the questions, here what he had to say ... *hope he's not falling from his chair* LOL!

I don't want to get nozzy or even try to invade Leehom's personal life.. but really can't help... I just dont get it, why on earth that she decided to marry somebody else and left Leehom broken hearted.. Millions and millions girls out there are dying to be in her shoes.

But whatever the reason was, I want to thank her ... because of that sorrow and pain... some of Leehom's most beautiful ballads were born, included "Forever Love".

The background song is Mozart's "the Marriage of Figaro". I dont think Leehom just picked and used it without any purpose. The Marriage of Figaro is a very famous comic opera by Mozart. The 4 acts are about love, betrayal and forgivenss. It's often called a "one crazy days or day of madness" because of the comedy and some silliness of the acts.

Leehom is scheduled to performed at Shanghai World Expo 2010 with Taipei Symphony Orchestra at 10.15AM... until then he just keeps low profile, too low that there's no news even on his latest movie and album. I hope he is resting, taking some break to get ready for the super busy days of promotions and more MusicMan Concerts at some cities in China this year.

While I try to chill... *oh, it's hard for me when there's no fresh update*.. I found this picture from ourhome china. I dont know if it's a real picture, or just taken from an MV or something, but I love it so much. It's really refreshing and touching at the same time to see what Leehom has accomplished up to today. He soooo deserves it.

Andy Jaffe ‘74, a Berklee alumnus and a former Berklee faculty member, has taught at Williams College in Williamstown, Massachusetts, for 22 years. During the 1990s, he worked with Wang Leehom ‘99 on jazz theory and piano. “He started playing jazz piano at Williams,” Jaffe recalls. “His jazz piano playing is quite good now. In addition to everything else he does, Leehom is a fantastic violinist. He was the best violinist at Williams the moment he got there and won the concerto competition his first year. I was cleaning up my office recently, and I found a copy of his senior thesis. It was a musical titled The Bite That Burns . . . about Dracula. Leehom is a very versatile musician and a bona fide intellectual.”

In the spring of 2009, Jaffe taught at Tainan National University of the Arts in Taiwan and in concerts with his famous student, revisited material they played years before. “These were major Leehom concert events,” Jaffe says. “At one, we played jazz and Leehom sang the Lambert, Hendricks, and Ross version of ‘Cottontail.’ We did it with three voices at Williams, but for this concert, Leehom learned the highlights of each of the three parts and sang them-even Annie Ross’s parts. It was pretty impressive. He also played vibes on a tune he’d written when he was at Berklee. The other concert featured his band and I just sat in when he sang ‘I Feel Good’ by James Brown. It was a switch for me to be thronged by autograph seekers as I left the stage. I’m used to jazz gigs where there are more people in the band than in the audience! I appreciated Leehom walking me to the train station when I left because I know it can be a nuisance for him to go out in public. All these people were coming up to him [and] wanting to get a picture with him.”

After Leehom graduated from Williams, Jaffe never anticipated how the career of his student would unfold. “He’s got a lot of different talents,” Jaffe says. “He’s already doing fantastic things, but nothing he does in the future will surprise me. It is the greatest pleasure for a teacher to see what their students end up doing when they go out into the world.”

Among the many fantastic careers of Berklee alumni, that of singer/songwriter, multi-instrumentalist, and movie star Wang Leehom '99 stands out for its artistic depth and breadth and its impact on millions throughout the Chinese-speaking world. Leehom's name and face are so instantly recognizable in Asia that a simple trip to the grocery store quickly becomes a tabloid event. He has had numerous radio hits and million-selling records, and his acting talents have led to silver-screen collaborations with major figures in the film world. He is also ubiquitous in Asian ad campaigns for McDonald's, Coke, Suzuki motorcycles, Elite Shoes, and many more.

Raised in Rochester, New York, the second of three sons born to Chinese immigrants, Leehom grew up fully immersed in American culture and English was his primary language. In addition to undertaking serious classical studies in violin and orchestral percussion at Eastman School of Music, he also played electric guitar and sang classic-rock songs with his garage band. His diverse musical interests and talents have provided experiences ranging from rocking out before tens of thousands at huge stadium concerts to an appearance as a guest conductor and violin soloist with the Hong Kong Philharmonic performing music by Leonard Bernstein, Aram Khachaturian, and of course, Wang Leehom.

After finishing high school, Leehom enrolled at Williams College in the Berkshires region of Massachusetts, where he pursued music and Asian studies. His explorations of Mandarin Chinese and jazz piano illuminated his career path. His music professor, Andy Jaffe '74, pointed him toward Berklee after graduation for further musical rounding [see "Out into the World" on page 25]. Throughout high school, Leehom had been recording his songs, and BMG Taiwan started issuing his records. It didn't take long for his style of rock, pop ballads, and hip-hop (with Chinese lyrics) to catch on. He was named the best new artist for 1996 by People's Daily newspaper in Taiwan and a steady stream of awards, accolades, platinum album sales, and roles in six feature films has followed. Leehom's latest movie role finds him costarring with Jackie Chan in the upcoming film Big Soldier. Previously, Oscar-winning director Ang Lee tapped Leehom for a major role in his 2007 film Lust, Caution.

In a phone call from his home in northern Taiwan in late August, Leehom mentioned his involvement in relief efforts for victims of the late-summer typhoons that devastated southern Taiwan. He lent his celebrity to telethons and a 30-hour fundraising concert organized by the Christian charity World Vision. When he returned to work the next week, he headlined with his band at a 45,000-seat stadium in Beijing. Leehom told me that massive mainland China has more than 300 cities with populations of more than a million people, so he has many places to play. While Leehom is not as well known among Western music fans, his stature throughout Asia is such that he was chosen to bear the Olympic torch for one leg of its trek to Beijing in 2008 and was among the celebrities who performed at the closing ceremonies of the games.

His musical output blends cutting-edge Western popular music styles and beats with folkloric Chinese elements and instrumentation. Leehom refers to his blend as "chinked out" music, a term his Chinese fans don't consider a slur but an accurate descriptor. His American roots and serious approach to Chinese language and culture have yielded a winning combination, making Leehom a cultural icon for a rising generation of Asian youth.

You have a huge following in Asia. In what country do you have the largest concentration of fans?

My music's in Chinese, and there are a lot of Chinese-speaking regions throughout Asia: Singapore, Malaysia, Hong Kong, Taiwan, and mainland China. China is probably where I have the largest following.

Is it true that you didn't speak Chinese at home but learned it later?

I grew up speaking English. My brothers and I were the first generation in my family born in the States. My parents would speak Chinese to each other when they didn't want us to know what they were saying. But we'd pick up some of the words.

What kind of music did you listen to?

In elementary school, I guess it was mostly classical. I was always going between violin, the drums, piano, and guitar. I also sang. Later I got into the Beastie Boys pretty hard core. Their music kind of changed my life.

Did you play songs by the Beastie Boys?

I had a band, and we played classic-rock stuff. We didn't have a DJ or do scratching, so we couldn't sound like the Beastie Boys. I probably wouldn't be able to sound like the Beastie Boys today, either, if I tried. I started writing songs back then. I think I wrote my first song in junior high about my first girlfriend.

Did you study music formally then, or were you self-taught?

Living in Rochester, New York, was great because that's where the Eastman School of Music is. I think I was about six or so when I started formally studying violin and orchestral percussion. I took voice lessons after my voice changed.

When it came time for college, you attended Williams College.

That's right. I studied Chinese and jazz there. In my first year, I sought out the head of the jazz department, Andy Jaffe. He had actually taught at Berklee for four years before he came to Williams. That was really the beginning of a wonderful friendship and the best musical education that I've ever had. I studied jazz piano with Andy for four years at Williams.

He wrote the book Jazz Harmony that is a pretty definitive text. It was extremely helpful for jazz theory. I recently got him to teach for the spring [2009] semester here at the [Tainan National University of the Arts]. He took a sabbatical from Williams. He took the kids from zero to 100 percent in one semester. It was amazing.

After you graduated from Williams, what prompted you to come to Berklee?

Andy suggested that I check it out. At Berklee I had great [voice] lessons with Cheryl Bentyne from the Manhattan Transfer. I was very fortunate that she was on the faculty then. I also worked with Rich Mendelson [MP&E faculty member] on a couple of singles, and both turned out to be big hits in Asia. One is called "Descendants of the Dragon," which was a huge hit in 1999 and a very important song for the direction that pop music took in Asia. It was one of the first songs that had the vibe that I call "chinked out." It's basically hip-hop with a lot of Chinese elements and Chinese instrumentation, pentatonic melodies, and rap in English. It was a real blend of East and West.

When you attended Berklee, were you just launching your music career?

No. I actually recorded my first album when I was a freshman in high school. So I was already doing it when I came to Berklee.

Where did your career begin to take off?

Everything began in Rochester, New York. I didn't go to Taiwan until after high school. My interest in recording started when I was 13 or 14 years old. I bought my first four-track tape recorder and just locked myself in the basement to write and arrange songs. The first album came out in my sophomore year on the BMG label.

How did you connect with BMG at such a young age?

It was through a talent competition that I got my first contract through BMG Taiwan. After that, everything just kind of happened. I entered this competition on a whim the summer before my senior year of high school. That was when I made my first trip to Taiwan. I saw a poster on the wall of a restaurant advertising a talent competition. It was the type of thing that I would do just for fun and to meet the other kids there. It turned out to be kind of a scouting program for BMG.

One thing led to another, and during high school and college I was making albums during summer vacation or winter vacation. I didn't really think of it as the beginning of a career; it was more like a summer job. I was getting paid, but I wasn't a professional. I didn't really have any chops as a producer, and I didn't know my way around the studio at all. It took me a few albums to actually understand the studio. After that, I had the career launched in my mind.

Was it your plan to develop your career in Asia rather than America?

I never really had plans to launch an American career. I think I'm lucky that things started in Asia, because I was able to develop as a pure musician, to be known for my music and let the music speak for itself. In America, I'd rather be known for my music than as the "Chinese artist." In Asia it's easier to let my music speak for itself.

The production values on your albums are extremely high, and the playing is very sophisticated. Do you use American or Asian players?

I pretty much play all the instruments myself. I play all the guitars and do all the programming. On the latest album, the drums were played by Eric Fawcett from the group N.E.R.D. He's based in Minneapolis, but he tours with me.

I'm interested in how you work in the studio. Do you like to track live with other musicians in the room, or do they send tracks via the Internet?

I've done it all ways. I don't have many rules, except that I try to stay out of the studio as long as possible. I like tricking myself into integrating work and leisure as much as I can. I often write or arrange a track when I'm on the road, in airplanes and cars. I think that's when I do the best work. That way, I hear the music like the audience hears it.

When I go into the studio and turn on my computer, it becomes work. I open up the piano and think that I have to write a hit song. That's not fun. It's a lot less painful when you're just kind of chilling out somewhere and sort of writing in your subconscious. When a great idea surfaces, I just pull it out of the air and write it down or record it into my cell phone or something else. Once I get a whole bunch of songs I think are really strong, the lyrics are done, and I've arranged them in my laptop, then I go to the studio to track them. That's really fun because you can get creative and completely crazy and lose yourself if all the preproduction is done before. I don't want to go into the studio and start rolling tape when I don't know what I'm doing.

Do you take sequences of your tunes into the studio and replace synthesized parts with live instruments?

I do that sometimes. It depends on the style of the song and the arrangement. Sometimes you don't want live instruments. I may lay down a live instrument and then think the track doesn't sound as good as what I had originally. If you're recording with MIDI, you can try listening to the song with a different drum sound. In the mixing, I enjoy being able to change from a Yamaha piano sound to a Bösendorfer piano with plug-ins. It's nice to have that flexibility.

Do you produce your albums, or do you have a producer work alongside you?

I self-produce, but I'm vigilant about playing my music for other producers or friends and getting constructive criticism. I do everything at my private studio at home. It's wonderful to be able to just wake up and hit the space bar and listen to what you did the night before. It's like being an artist who always has an easel right there. You can really get immersed without worrying about the cost per hour.

How many hit songs and albums have you had in Asia?

Well, I don't know how you qualify hits, but since 1995 I've made 14 original solo albums. There have also been greatest-hits albums or soundtracks for movies that have a song of mine on them. I don't know how to define a hit, but at my concerts, people are singing along and we've got a set list with 30 songs on it.

Your Shangri-La album is celebrated for your use of Chinese and folkloric influences and reflects the indigenous music of regions such as Mongolia.

After Shangri-La came out, people really got what the "chinked out" vibe was, but I'd been doing it for a long time. There are 54 different ethnic minorities in China, all tribal cultures. They all have their own language and songs, and a lot of them have their own instruments as well. I have large a collection of Chinese instruments. The stringed instruments are easiest for me to learn because of my background in violin and guitar.

What prompted you to blend Western pop elements with Chinese folkloric music?

I was inspired by classical musicians like [Béla] Bartók, who looked to Hungarian folk music for ideas for his composing. He went out and transcribed rhythms and watched folk dancing and was able to infuse that into his writing. [Claude] Debussy heard the gamelan. Each made deliberate decisions to differentiate [his] sound from that of other composers. That made me realize that indigenous music was what I should be digging into. I think there was a period of time in Chinese pop music where everything was just really Western. People were just copying what was on the radio in the States. I wanted to make music that was recognizably pop but had a different twist. My vision for Chinese music is for it to be international, but at the same time to have its own sound, like Indian pop music. Indian musicians always try to keep Indian elements in their songs, even though you hear that they're international-sounding productions. That music also inspired me in developing my sound.

As the world gets smaller and smaller, it becomes even more important for us to dig into these roots. Traveling to areas in China with ethnic minorities made me realize that some of the tribal cultures are endangered. The young kids are moving to the cities and aren't preserving their cultures. A lot of the younger kids don't speak the tribal languages anymore; they all speak Mandarin Chinese now. I'm glad to have shined some light on these cultures while they're still around.

Which musical directions have you considered for future albums?

I'm really interested these days in creating music that is driven by the language. To me, Chinese is a very musical-sounding language, and a rich source of inspiration for melodies and songwriting. I've become interested in linguistics, the aural qualities of Chinese, the grammar, and how sentences are structured. There are many idioms in Chinese that are extremely interesting. There are unique qualities in the language that younger languages such as English don't share. Old Chinese proverbs and sayings that everyone knows just pop up in conversation every few sentences. They're very unique to the language and interesting to me as a composer.

I trust you'll still include r&b, rock, and hip hop elements.

Yeah. hip-hop and r&b are newer genres and open for doing weird stuff, like sampling a Tibetan monk or something like that. Put that in a hip-hop track, and it sounds OK. Put it in a rock song, and it doesn't work as well. For a lot of rock songs, you need the sound of electric guitar coming from a Marshall amp, and you need drums and bass. If those sounds aren't there, it's just not rock. Rock is already a very mature genre, whereas hip-hop is very edgy and still maturing. You can still push the envelope.

Was your performance at the closing ceremonies of the Beijing Olympics a career highlight?

It was incredible to play for 90,000 people-really amazing. It literally took my breath away when I walked into the performing area, and the place was completely packed: a thousand performers. I'll never forget the feeling of seeing 90,000 people out there.

Few artists have acting and music careers in the American entertainment industry. Is this more common for artists in Asia?

Yeah, it's common. You get a lot of flak for it-sometimes from the States-for being a singer who tries to act, and vice versa. A lot of times it doesn't work for audiences. They can find you unconvincing because they seem to accept your persona in only one medium. But to me, it's a perfectly natural extension of the creative process. Nowadays, if you're a pop musician, you're shooting music videos. I've done over 50 music videos, and I've directed 15 or 20. I realized it wasn't that big a leap.

Have you gotten seriously into the art of acting?

I take it pretty seriously. Working with Ang Lee was a huge educational experience. He's just an amazing teacher and, of course, an amazing director. He kind of threw me into actor boot camp, and it was sink or swim.

I've just finished a movie called Big Soldier with Jackie Chan that will come out next February.

That was difficult. There was a lot of kung fu, a lot of fighting, and a lot of injuries. It's basically just Jackie and me for the whole film. We got to spend a lot of time together. We've been friends for 10 years but never really got to work together; it was great. He's quite a legend

With your diverse musical background and other interests, you've developed an amazing career.

I've been lucky. I think about it all the time. I think about where my music is going and about my film career as well. I'm also a scriptwriter and have written a couple of screenplays that will go into production starting in November. So whether it's writing a song or writing a story, it's the creative part that's most exciting to me.

Can't tell you how happy I am to see this picture. Out of the pictures we have seen from the movie set, this was the best. I think it's gonna be very cool to have 2 Leehom in 1 movie. One is with that silly look, the other is with the superstar look just like this.

However, I can't get the translation correctly. Let me quote it here for you to have your own guess or interpretation. Don't shoot me if you're confused too. LOL!

Leehom visited his stylist's new born baby in Taiwan on May 22, 2010. *I hope I got it right, as the whole translation in the page was quite weird. lol*

I don't know if this was part of Nikon's promotion but aah well, I'm happy to see casual pictures of Leehom... actually, no obviously, I'm always happy to see his pictures :D.

And, he's such a good endorser coz ..... *taramtamtam!!* I think I really wanna buy that "COOLPIX" Nikon Camera soon.

Leehom Recommends Yen-J

In his Facebook, Leehom promoted other artist/musician who's not in the same label company as him. Whatever his reason was, I believe it's because he's truly sincere and honest, the combination that is now rare in the competitive music industry in China, where at least, there's 1 album released almost every single week.

Leehom once said, he's just trying to make good music and didn't really care about the commercialism success. I agree with him. When an artist let profit influence his/her works, there won't be such a genuine art anymore. But I guess it's hard for him to be in the situation between his passion to create good music and "pressure" from his label company to create good music that they can sell. He did a great job though. If he's just feeding the demand, I don't think he successfully continued giving us surprises and maybe he'd just stick to his famous "chinked-out" style. As he said many times, he likes to do things differently. That, IMHO, is what keeping his fans anxious of waiting for his new album.

Anyway.. I looked at the artist he recommended and agreed with him.

This Yen-J is really not bad at all.

Somebody posted a track list of Leehom's new album at baidu.com and said that the album will be called "STRAIGHT". Whether it's true or not, I don't know, I'm just really super excited already!

The list consists of 15 songs and some are with English titles.. Although I dream of having English songs, I doubt it that they will be in English. However, considering that the album will be tied with his new movie, I think 15 tracks are logically acceptable.

And that word "U.S." LOL! what does it mean? was it supposed to be "us" ?

The Nose

I remember few years ago, there were some discussion in the internet among Leehom's fans to list 1 thing of Leehom that was considered "not perfect". And the only 1 thing I agree immediately was... his big nose! Oh yeaa... Leehom has a big nose. Fans said it was like his father. Well, I have never seen his father's pictures, but I know his mother doesn't have a nose like him.. so I guess fans were right.

Nobody is perfect. I think it's cool that Leehom fans understand that pretty clear. They discussed Leehom's "flaw" freely and openly without afraid of hurting each other. And more importantly, they way they love and respect Leehom, didn't put them inside the irrational blind idol's worship things.

So, don't sue me for saying that your nose is big, okay Leehom?? Take it as a compliment :) I always think people with round nose (like yours) to be more friendly and more approachable rather those with sharp nose. Moreover, Chinese said, you're lucky when you have a big nose, that would mean you have more blessings in life. I dont know.. maybe because with your big nostril you'll be getting more oxygen that the others ? LOL!!!
